A hair transplant clinic in Scotland has reported an increase of over 400% in the number of procedures they carried out in 2014, compared to 2013.

Celtic FC footballer Leigh Griffiths Recently Had a Hair Transplant to Address his Male Pattern Hair LossThe booming popularity of hair restoration in the country is thought to be related to a dissipation of the stigma that had previously been attached to this type of surgery, which had been seen as vain by older generations.

With today’s advanced technology and wider availability, combined with an increasing number of high profile hair loss role models like Wayne Rooney and Calum Best, it seems more and more men are happy to go under the knife – or the robot – to restore their hair.

In the past couple of years, a number of young Scottish footballers with signs of male pattern baldness, including Celtic FC duo Anthony Stokes and Leigh Griffiths, have been open about undergoing hair transplants, sharing updates with social media followers on Twitter. This type of association, and being able to follow their regrowth results, is likely to have a positive effect on how these types of operations are perceived.
Whilst it may be easy for celebrities and top flight footballers to afford these pricey operations, they seem to be something men are now prepared to save for in the interest of restoring their hair. It is also noticeable that men enquiring about transplants tend to be of a younger age than previous clients.

Top surgeons do in fact advise against this, recommending men wait until they are at least 30 years old before considering FUT or FUE surgery. For those whose hair loss has not yet reached an advanced stage, following a course of male hair loss treatments is often a cheaper, non-invasive way to regrow hair. One thing that many outspoken celebrity hair transplant advocates fail to mention is that, in order to prevent further hair loss around the transplanted area, it is necessary to follow treatment courses involving either or both finasteride 1mg and minoxidil. Surgeons often ask patients to follow a treatment course for at least six months before they operate too, in order to stabilise shedding, making the hair easier to work with during the transplant.
