How to Stop a Receding Hairline

The highly common problem faced by men in today’s world is a receding hairline. Men’s hair loss – which is most frequently due to the hereditary condition, Male Pattern Baldness – may occur due to a variety of reasons and it is believed that a receding hairline happens because of stress. Although there are no validated studies to show that stress can result in thinning hair in the temporal areas, it is widely considered to be true.

Another reason for the loss of hair may be improper circulation as a lack of proper blood circulation in the scalp can result in loss of hair.

There are different patterns of hair loss in men. Some of them include loss of hair on the vertex, receding hairline, and diffuse thinning all over the top of the head. In the case of diffuse thinning from male pattern baldness, the thinning occurs without affecting the hairline shape.

The best means to identify the hair loss type and the hair loss level is to use the Norwood Hamilton Scale – the most popular chart used to measure male pattern hair loss. It also reveals what the result will be if receding hairline is not treated.

However, there are different means of treating receding hairline. One such treatment is the use of DHT inhibitors such as finasteride 1mg, an oral tablet taken daily by men aged 18 or over. They restrain the production of DHT that causes androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern hair loss, and help to inhibit the thinning process generally although its efficacy with regard to treating a receding hairline specifically is unknown. Excessive production of DHT results in scalp inflammation. Super Oxide Dismutase treatments, on the other hand, help to overcome the problem of scalp inflammation.

The vasodilator, minoxidil is approved by the UK and USA’s medical bodies, the MHRA and the FDA, for the treatment of genetic hair loss in both men and women. Its high strength versions are known to be effective for more steadfast areas of hair loss, such as around the hairline and temples, stimulating the follicles to produce accelerated hair growth.

Anti-androgens can be used to prevent the binding of DHT with androgen and thus prevent the damage of hair follicle.

Many hair loss products claim to help combat a receding hairline; however not all of them are effective. If in doubt, consult a specialist medical practitioner to discuss the variety of clinically proven, medically licensed and/or government regulated hair loss treatments and determine a programme that is right for you.
